Camden Town Area Guide

There is an eclectic mix of mews houses on the cobbled streets of Camden Mews and Murray Mews which have been described as an architecture buff’s paradise. They vary enormously in style and architecture, spanning the decades from the 1960s to the 1990s. Many plots were purchased individually by architects for themselves to live in. Norman Foster and Richard Rogers, when part of their 1960s practice, Team 4, are amongst those to build houses there. Over the years many of the larger properties have been converted into multiple flats and apartments to accommodate the ongoing influx of people eager to live in the area. The one-time industrial strength of the area saw a number of large industrial buildings become empty in the mid-20th century, but by the 1980s many of these were converted into stylish contemporary warehouse-style apartments. New-build flats in Camden Town are also being developed, ensuring the area remains at the forefront of London’s property market.

The area has a long and storied history, constantly evolving with the changing times and it remains one of the capital’s most sought after places to live. Where it once led the way for industry and farming, redevelopments in the 19th century saw it become a popular destination for the middle classes, bolstered by the opening of Regent’s Canal and railway connections to the northwest of England. In the modern area, media and PR companies have taken up residency, alongside the many artist galleries and studios that have produced some of the UK’s most prominent thespians, writers and musicians.

Camden Town has some of the most famous London parks to enjoy throughout the year. Primrose Hill offers wonderful views of the capital on a clear day, while Regent’s Park is always a main attraction during the warmer months, with its pretty gardens, lakes, wildlife and wide, open spaces. You’ll also find London Zoo there too, with its wide variety of animal species from across the world.

The area has an excellent reputation when it comes to schools. At primary level Haverstock School was rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and is highly sought after by local parents. Abacus Belsize Primary School also received the same rating as their inspection certification. Camden School for Girls and Maria Fidelis Catholic School both received strong reports from Ofsted during their last inspection, with places available for secondary-aged children and those aged 16-18. The Working Men’s College also has a ‘Good’ inspection rating and accepts school leavers looking for the next stage of their education. For those looking for a private school, North Bridge House Prep School comes highly recommended. The school received an outstanding rating in their most recent School Inspection Service report and offers a wide range of subjects and extracurricular activities students can participate in.
